Classic WPC Decking Installation Guide
Ground Preparation
Assessment and Cleaning: Thoroughly inspect the area for flatness and stability. Remove all weeds and debris to ensure a clean base. For weed prevention, lay a root-stop fabric across the area.
Slope for Drainage: Confirm a slight slope, ideally around 2%, to facilitate water drainage away from the decking, which is crucial for preventing water damage.
Laying and Fixing Joists
Joist Spacing: Arrange the joists with a maximum gap of 400mm between their centers, reducing to 300mm for enhanced support. Ensure the use of double joists at points where two decking boards meet to prevent potential board movement or shrinkage.
Joist Placement: For larger decks, you can lay the joists directly on a substantial concrete base. In standard installations, secure the joists to the concrete using expansion screws. Employ 2-3 joist fitters per meter of joist, spacing them 30-40cm apart to provide a solid base for the decking.
Level Adjustment: After fixing the joists, check their level. Any unevenness can be corrected by placing small shims between the joist and the ground.
Deck Board Installation
Starting Board: Begin with the installation of the first board using starting clips or side screws, maintaining a 10mm gap from any boundaries for expansion.
Board Attachment: Attach subsequent boards using clips or screws in sequence, ensuring a uniform gap between boards to allow for expansion. This gap should be adjusted based on the deck length and local temperature variations, with a minimum of 1mm recommended.
Expansion and Contraction: Account for the WPC products’ expansion rate of 0.3% to 0.5% by maintaining appropriate gaps between boards. Use the provided formula to calculate the exact gap needed based on the maximum temperature in your area and the installation temperature.
Finishing Touches
Edge Covering: Depending on site requirements and aesthetics, you may opt for uncovered edges or finish them with L-shaped aluminium or WPC covers for a refined look. When using WPC material for edge covering, ensure a 10mm gap for expansion.
Cover Installation: For aluminium or WPC covers, lay the covering over the deck edge, mark drill points, pre-drill holes, and then secure the cover.
